“This is what we die for”: The story behind the minerals in your smart phone

Did you know your smart phone contains minerals that might have been mined by children in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in appalling conditions?

What’s more, smart phone companies like Apple and Samsung tell Amnesty International they don’t really know much about the cobalt they source for their billion-dollar industry.

We don’t think that’s good enough. Companies like these, and the ones that put the lithium-ion battery in your electric car, must follow international standards when sourcing metals from high-risk or conflict zones like the DRC.

Amnesty International is calling on Apple, Samsung, LG, Sony and the other twelve companies we shared our research with to work with the DRC authorities to improve working conditions for cobalt miners and ensure that children working in those mines can attend school.
